Sometimes, we all need a little motivation and since we all know I’m a procrastinator, I look to my friends to keep me on track. After all, they’re the ones who challenged me to write in the first place.
I’m a part of some author sprint groups. Each group is different. In one we set a timer for 20 minutes and then let each other know how many words we’ve written when the time is up. In another, it’s 60 minutes. The time period is irrelevant. What being a part of these groups means to me, is that I’m forced to focus on whatever task I’m doing at that time.
In one group, there are authors of various genres including horror, thriller and romance. It’s unlikely you’ll find me reading horror, but I love me a good crime thriller! These authors are prolific writers and I could never compete with the number of words they push out. However, knowing they too have deadlines, keeps me sane as I add to my word count.
However, at least three times a week, I write with one author. We either WhatsApp video call or Zoom so we can SEE what the other is doing. This way, we can pull each other back from the distractions of the day. I must admit that some days, neither of us writes even one word in our current work in progress, but hey, you need a break every now and then, don’t you!
Then there are days when I’m productive all on my own. On those days, the bug bites and I HAVE to sit and write the story bubbling in my head. I’m not an author who has characters nattering away in her head (my family would have me committed to the loony bin, I’m sure!), but I can visualise the places where my characters live / work / play. I can see the movie play out as I write the words. It’s quite fascinating, really!
And to cheer you up for the week ahead….here’s my latest drawing 🙂
